TEACHING MELODY THROUGH SONG LEADING,

in Hawley, MA

Song Leading is offered for those wishing to foster communal singing in churches, schools and community groups. This is very different from 'choral conducting': it focuses on a love for and knowledge of true folksongs, hymns and spirituals.  The leader learns to analyze and lead the songs in a way that enables others to join easily in communicative singing.

Each day begins with a fine-tuning of the musical senses and a deepening of musical experiences through intensive study and discussion.  In practicum sessions small groups of three or four people will practice ‘teaching’ each other.  The SING technique will be paramount: using the voice to convey subtle musical articulations.  There will be a public SING during the week where each participant will have the opportunity to lead a group of townspeople.

Participants will share the cost and preparation of meals together.  Housing within walking distance is available for Sunday through Saturday nights.  We will supply transportation to and from the train at Springfield, MA or the airport at Hartford, CT for flights arrivals on Sunday afternoon and departures on the following Sunday afternoon.   Ask us for driving instructions.

Minimum class size 4, maximum 8.
